The Grand Master Plan

It's been about 12 days since I turned 30. Although my Birthday was a bit of an anticlimax, it's fun (and a little daunting!) now thinking about how I am going to raise money.

Last time I checked I had raised about £1300, which leaves a grand total of £28,700 – yikes!

So I need to come up with a timeline plan and get my thoughts on iPaper…

September – thinking cap on

October – launch online auction to close November for those looking for bargain gifts for Christmas! Possible team hillwalking event in October Holidays (Ben Nevis?)

November – auction closes, Christmas cards available for sale.

December – Fundraising pack launched. This will be available for any of you who would like to raise money for Projecthirty – I'd love your help! The pack will include tshirts, stickers and leaflets. You can use these to hold any event, coffee morning, come dine with me, running event etc etc.

January – recover after Christmas. Film Kickstarter video.

February – event organised by super sister Mairi possibly with fancy makeup company (Edinburgh)???

March – Invitations sent out for the PROJECTHIRTY fundraising ceilidh.

April – Hillwalking/running team event – West Highland Way??

June – end of term at school, PROJECTHIRTY rest month – phew!

July – Summer Holidays!! Small event – need to work on super sis to help with this!

August – Jog Scotland 5k

September – DEADLINE!! PROJECTHIRTY ceilidh in Edinburgh.

October – visit to Kenya to see the work getting started!

It doesn’t take a genius to see that although all these events will raise significant funds it won’t be close to £30,000. That’s because I can’t do this on my own, I need you to help by running your own event, getting your friends involved and all taking part. I have already been amazed by the number of people who have donated but I can’t keep asking the same people for money.

If you would like to hold a PROJECTHIRTY event then just let me know – whether that’s wedding favours, an event, a coffee morning, a come dine with me, Christmas cards – ANYTHING!

I am hoping to visit the school in October and I would love it if you wanted to come too and see the impact of your fundraising to these children – I promise it will be one of the most amazing and rewarding experiences you will ever have.

I love an old photo and it has been nice to take the time to look back on some of my highlights of the last 30 years (some of the reading this will start to panic – I have lots of pictures!!).  When I was this age it was all about the cake.  (Unfortunately, I couldn’t find one of my Birthday so this was my little sisters.)

I’d like to thank my family for their support with Projecthirty, I didn’t have a cake with blue smarties this year but your donations mean a lot to me and to the kids I am trying to help.

Nursery Class (1980s)

(Primary 2 – still in the 80s)

It is amazing to look back on some of these pictures and still be friends with a lot of of the people in them.  To be honest I hadn’t really appreciated the importance of friends until this year.  The support I have had for Projecthirty has been genuinely phenomenal!   From every ‘like’ to ‘share’ to every text offering help, to your own friends and family donating and getting involved..incredible!

Furthermore a big thanks to colleagues @ The Compass, family friends, other relatives, Dawn and Dave, ‘The Dirty Pint’ and the rest of you who took the time to donate – even though we only met briefly or not even at all.  It is your donations that keep me going 🙂

…..I wouldn’t be doing this if it wasn’t for JP’s inspiration and guidance in helping me see how even little old me can make a difference (see for all his adventures!!).

He loves a good quote and Ms Roosevelt is one of my favourites so here goes..

“If anyone were to ask me what I want out of life I would say- the opportunity for doing something useful, for in no other way, I am convinced, can true happiness be attained.”
― Eleanor Roosevelt

(well, I couldn’t resist a funny photo to finish!!)

News from Kwa Njenga

It was great to receive an email today from the Head Teacher at Kwa Njenga Primary. Her name is Cyprine and she is one if the most amazing people I have ever met. I’m delighted to now be in regular contact with her to receive updates on the school. It reminded me again of the troubles that they face and even sitting here right now with everything i need; food, clothes, water etc, genuinely makes giving up one Birthday nothing in comparison. I decided to also look back through my photos. For those of you who didn’t follow my trip this is Kwa Njenga Slum..

And these are a couple if the kids making their way to school.

When I first met Cyprine she spoke of the problems the school face and indeed the children. Yet, she was very much like every other teacher I know; passionate, caring and dedicated. I remember taking this photograph on the way in to see her and being so impressed at her high standards and expectations of these children.

During lunch break I went for a look at one if the Early Years classrooms – this one for me stood out as the teacher had worked really hard to put things up on the walls and make it look as much like a classroom as possible.

My classroom..

This comparison for me is really hard.

So today I wrote out a list of what i would have liked for my Birthday..

Cath Kidston
Herve Leger
Blah blah blah blah..

Instead I have written a letter/email to them all looking for an item that I can auction to raise money.

This is where I’d appreciate your help..

1. If you know someone who might donate something then if you could give then a shout for me that’d be fab.

2. Tweet those companies on my Birthday list..the more annoying tweets and reminders they get about helping the better!

3. Keep sharing the story.

3 days to go..

Much love as always x

One Week to Thirty

I am officially 29 years, 11 months and 24 days old, which means only one thing…one week till thirty!!

It has been really nice over the last few weeks hearing about what everyone has been doing for their 30th birthday – trip aways, amazing dinner dates, beautiful gifts and some awesome 30th parties too…

It’s at this point that I find what I am trying to do particularly challenging. Yet when I look at Projecthirty I love it. I feel it has genuinely taken me 30 years to get to this point where I am happy with who I am and what I am about…and it’s been an incredible 30 years. Some real highs, along with some real lows. All of which have lead me to this point in time. The people, the places, the parties, the presents – all of it. I would never have given up the party at 16, or the gifts at 21 – and although I am still me (loud, over excitable and a little bit bonkers) it’s a great feeling knowing that this is only the beginning of the journey….

…who knows what lies around the corner (or over the water as I don’t have a picture of a corner!).

Next weekend I am 30.

If you would have bought me a gift – please don’t, donate on my fundraising page instead!

If you would have wished me ‘Happy Birthday’ then please share my story instead (that’s all you guys on FB and Twitter!)

If you would have called for a catch up then still do – I love a good bleather!
